“A Survey of Preservation Activities in Cultural Heritage Institutions – FY2012″ is a pilot survey coordinated by the Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) of the American Library Association (ALA) and the Association of Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS).

The goal of this survey is to document the state of preservation activities in this digital era via quantitative data that facilitates information sharing and tracking changes in the preservation and conservation fields over time.

Any cultural heritage institution with preservation activities may complete this survey. The survey will be open from April 25, 2013 through June 25, 2013.

Questions focus on preservation activities for fiscal year 2012 (as defined by your institution) and will document your institution’s administration and staffing of preservation activities, budget and expenditures, general preservation programming (disaster planning, education, outreach and more), conservation treatment, preservation reformatting and digitization, and digital preservation activities.

The “Protecting Cultural Collections” workshops are presented in a 2-part sequence to produce the following outcomes for disaster preparedness activities:

Complete a disaster response & collection salvage plan by the end of Part 2
Learn how to train staff to implement your plan effectively
Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for your collections
Understand practical decision-making skills needed during an emergency
Experience salvage procedures for a wide variety of material including books, documents, photos & objects

The workshop days are scheduled 4 weeks apart. Participants will prepare short assignments prior to the first session; between sessions, they will undertake additional assignments resulting in a completed disaster plan at the end of Part 2. Upon completion, the institution will be invited to join an informal network of WESTPAS trained personnel to provide mutual aid in the event of emergencies involving collections in the region.

Who should attend: Administrators and staff responsible for emergency preparedness, response and decision-making, in all types of cultural institutions. By registering for the workshop, the institution commits to supporting the attendee(s) to achieve the workshop’s disaster preparedness goals. When possible, please send two attendees so they can work together on the disaster preparedness activities.

Workshop Description
You value your profession, but you’re not sure you have the words or know how to make an impact? This workshop provides information on how to identify goals, develop and deliver a message, and implement methods for advocating for archives programs and archives issues. Practical approaches, tangible models, and examples of materials needed to advocate for your archives programs and issues are offered as well.

In this workshop you’ll learn how to:

Develop a focused statement of an advocacy goal for your institution or an archives issue of concern;
Create a profile of the audience/individual to whom your advocacy efforts will be directed and develop a plan for how to approach that person/organization;
Craft advocacy support materials as part of the effort;
Deliver a three- to five-minute “pitch” to support your advocacy goal; and
Construct a framework (plan) for reaching your advocacy objectives.

Who should attend? Archivists, librarians, and museum curators at any experience level who want to enhance their skills in advocating for archives programs and issues.

This webinar discusses how to host an innovative public program on preserving personal digital information.

In an effort to share knowledge on how best to care for personal digital information, The Library of Congress’ National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program developed The Personal Digital Archiving Day Kit. The toolkit provides resources for staff at libraries, archives and other cultural institutions to help them plan and present a personal digital archiving day program.

This webinar focuses on the resources included in the kit, how the kit can be used to plan a public program, and why holding a personal digital archiving program is beneficial for both public libraries and their communities.

Learning outcomes: Learn practical tips for hosting a personal digital archiving day event.
Learn about resources on digital preservation that can help individuals preserve their digital files, photos, videos, emails, and social media.

Who should attend? Librarians and other information professionals interested in hosting a public event on how to preserve personal digital information.

Presenter: Erin Engle is a Digital Archivist with the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program at the Library of Congress. She coordinates and contributes to communications, outreach, and social media activities for the Program, works on developing personal digital archiving resources, and is Editor of the monthly Library of Congress Digital Preservation Newsletter. She has a BA in International Politics and French from The Pennsylvania State University and an MSLS from The Catholic University of America.
