Expect moderate to strenuous hiking, and a possibility of extreme heat. Bring your own lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen, and a sun hat. Signup by Monday, May 27th by email to Ellison_T@fortlewis.edu  This tour departs from the Center of Southwest Studies at 8:30 a.m. and expect to return by 6 p.m. at the latest. Mesa Verde National Park tour. Explore Balcony House with your colleagues. The tour requires people to descend a 100 foot long staircase, climb a 32 foot tall ladder, and crawl through a 12 foot long tunnel to reach the dwelling. The admission fee to the park has been waived for our grou ptour, however reservations and a $2.50 fee for the balcony house tour must be paid to Todd Ellison, at the registration table in the Center of Southwest Studies by 3 p.m., Thursday May 29th. This tour departs the Center of Southwest Studies at 8:30 a.m. and returns by early evening. Carpooling is strongly encouraged!

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Round trip is $60. Trains leave Durnago at 8:15 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., arrive in Silverton in time for lunch, and arrive back in Durango at 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Be sure to make your reservations a.s.a.p.! For more information, contact www.durangotrain.com

Animas View Overlook Trail (at the top of a twenty-minute drive on washboard dirt road up from Durango through the San Juan National Forest). The gentle, smoothly paved .6-mile wheelchair accessible circuit offers views north toward the San Juan Mountains (a beautiful view of the Animas Valley) and south to Durango down below. Signposts provide geological and ecological information about the trial. Picnic table and pit toilets are the top of the road, at the start of the paved walking path. You’re on your own for this one. See signup sheet at registration desk, to carpool. Directions: from Durnago, head north on Main Avenue to 25th Street. Make a left turn on 25th Street (also called Junction Creek Road) and proceed about three miles past the forest boundary sign. Continue on the dirt road past Junction Creek Campground, at milepost 7. On the right, you’ll see a parking lot with restrooms and the trailhead.

Smelter Mountain Overlook of Durango. For a restful, refreshing outing, within fifteen minutes’ drive of Fort Lewis College. Todd Ellison will lead this afternoon outing, departing from Gateway Park at 2 p.m. We will have some quiet time to read, think, and look for birds, and watch the ever-changing view. No physical exertion is necessary on this outing.

Getting there:

Maps:

http://www.discoverymaps.com/HomeMaps/CODurangoMap.htm  for Durango
http://www.fortlewis.edu/about_flc/maps/campusmap.pdf for Fort Lewis College campus (the Center of Southwest Studies is #48)

Directions:

Take 285 South. Plan to stay on Route 285 for the bulk of this trip, through Bailey, several mild mountain passes (Kenosha Pass and Red Hill Pass), outskirts of Fairplay (note mountains of rocks from mining), Antero Junction, Trout Creek Pass, Nathrop (note the river rafting), and the mountain splendors visible from the road south through Poncha Springs (and Poncha Pass), Villa Grove, and Saguache. The beautiful Sangre de Cristo range will be on your left.

You are HALF WAY THERE when you’re in the long stretch in the San Luis Valley, site of squashed debates about whether to tap its underlying aquifer to supply Denver subdivisions. Look for wild birds, lettuce, potatoes, sheep, migrant workers, and sod-roofed structures.

Don’t miss the turn! Turn Right at the CFonoco station onto Route 112 West to take you through Del Norte on Route 160 West. Durango is about 2 hours away when you reach South Fork. Enjoy your ride over Wolf Creek Pass (is that the 5th mountain pass?). Careful – depending on the season and the time of day – of rocks/boulders fallen onto the road, deer in the road, buckled-up pavement and ice. The view from hig up on the scenic turn-off (just before the sharp left descending curve off of Wolf Creek Pass past Treasure Falls on your left once you’re back down on the level) is spectacular any time. Pass through Pagosa Springs to U.S. Route 550 North / 160 West into Durango.

As you enter Durango you’ll see Home Depot on the left, then Wal-Mart on the left – and soon after that you should take State Highway 3 to the right at the light, and you’ll head straight up the front hill to the College. There’s a traffic light at the top of the front hill – go through it, and look for the large Center of Southwest Studies and Concert Hall buildings on your left, along the end of this stretch of road that used to be the approximate area of the Durango airport where Will Rogers landed on his fateful flight to Alaska. The trip is about 350 miles. People say it can be done in 6 hours, but we think 7 is more the case for most of us.
