According to the CIMA by-laws, this new leadership team takes over the CIMA organization effective July 1, 2010.

As CIMA’s business year comes to a close, it’s time to select new officers and Council members.
Below is the ballot for the 2010 CIMA election.

A few notes, concerning the ballot:

There are jfour questions total. The candidates for vice-president and for treasurer are running unopposed.
Please vote for them to approve their taking office. If you prefer, there is a choice for write-in candidates.
Also, please select 3 individuals for CIMA council. Also, there is a ballot question that would create a new standing “CIMA Awards Committee.”

The Thunderbird School of Global Management is accepting applications for a part-time (20 hours/week) archivist for the Thunderbird Archives.

The archivist is responsible for managing the archives of the School, processing materials, planning for space and storage, creating finding aids
and maintaining records and databases for cataloging materials. Serves as the School’s historian and develops expertise in the documents, photos, objects and other materials that represent the School’s historical record. Provides assistance to users, both internally and externally, promotes the use of the archives and works with campus units to collect and save materials that document activities and progress of the School. Collects and handles records in various formats, including digital and paper.

During the awards luncheon at the 2010 Western Round-Up joint-conference in Seattle, Washington, CIMA presented two awards: the Life-Time Achievement Award and the Service Award.

Guy Rocha presented 2010 CIMA Life-Time Achievement Award

Retired Nevada State Archivist, Guy Rocha, was awarded the 2010 CIMA Life-Time Achievement Award. Raised in Las Vegas, Rocha graduated from Clark High School. He received a BA from Syracuse University in New York, MA from San Diego State University, and pursued post-graduate study in history at the University of Nevada, Reno. He has been a Certified Archivist since 1989.

Guy Rocha taught in the Washoe County School District and at Western Nevada College. He worked at the Nevada Historical Society in Reno for over four years and served on the Nevada Historical Society Quarterly editorial board for twenty years.

Guy Rocha was Assistant Administrator for Archives and Records (State Archivist) at the State Library & Archives for twenty-eight years. He managed Nevada’s Archives, Records Management, and Micrographics and Imaging programs. “Common Cause of Nevada” awarded him its 1997 “Ethics in Government Award.” U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid appointed Rocha to the Advisory Committee on the Records of Congress in April 2005, and he was reappointed by Sen. Reid, the Majority Leader, in March 2007.

Guy Rocha received the Award of Merit from the American Association of State and Local history in Sept. 2007 for outstanding contributions to Nevada history. In May 2008, the Nevada State AFL-CIO honored Rocha as “A Friend of Nevada’s Working Families” at its 7th Annual induction ceremony in Las Vegas, and the City of Reno Historical Resources Commission selected him as its Historical Resources Award Recipient.

In addition, Rocha has published two books, written numerous articles and book reviews. He has published the “Historical Myth A Month” column in the Sierra Sage since January 1996 and it is posted on the Nevada State Library and Archives website. Since 2000, he has a bi-weekly myth-busting column in the Reno Gazette Journal. The column also appears in the Humboldt Sun, Battle Mountain Bugle, Lovelock Review-Miner, and the online Nevada Observer.

Guy Rocha has appeared or worked on numerous film and television documentaries. For almost thirteen years, Rocha hosted a live, call-in radio talk show on KPTL in Carson City known as the Monday History For Lunch Bunch. He was a rotating host the High Desert Forum on Reno-based KUNR, National Public Radio, from June 2001 to June 2008.

For his contributions, the Awards Committee of the Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists selected Guy Rocha to receive the first ever CIMA Life-Time Achievement Award (for the year 2010). His selection was unanimously confirmed by all CIMA Council Members and Officers. The prestigious CIMA Life-Time Achievement Award acknowledges and demonstrates appreciation for a life of service and leadership in the Archival Profession, by the peers and colleagues of the recipient. It is given out once annually, during CIMA’s annual meeting.

The award is presented as a diploma in a leather cover with the CIMA logo. The diploma cover is decorated with original artwork created specifically for this occasion. This year’s art is an oil on canvas painting, representing an artistic interpretation of the CIMA logo.

This year’s CIMA Life-Time Achievement Award citation reads:

We the colleagues and peers of Guy Rocha, come together on this day; Friday, April 30, 2010 to acknowledge and demonstrate our gratitude for his life of service and leadership in the Archival Profession.

Therefore, the members of the Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists, with representatives from the states of Nevada, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, and Arizona; today honors one of our organization’s founders; and presents the first CIMA Life-Time Achievement Award to GUY ROCHA having been selected by the CIMA Awards Committee, and unanimously confirmed by all CIMA Council Members and Officers.

Su Kim Chung presented 2010 CIMA Service Award

In addition, the newly created CIMA Service Award was presented to Su Kim Chung, for the year 2010. Su Kim Chung’s work as Manuscripts Librarian at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has been recognized as an important contribution to the archival profession in the inter-mountain region.

Her best-selling book Las Vegas: Then and Now is an important photographic survey of one of the nation’s best loved cities. Her leadership in the CIMA organization, as well as other archival groups (such as the Society of American Archivists) has brought much respect and notoriety to the inter-mountain region.

Her leadership during the Las Vegas Western Round-Up super joint-conference in 2005, helped secure the future of that conference series. And, it is only appropriate that she receives this award, during the very a meeting during that series.

The prestigious CIMA Service Award is given to an individual who has made significant contributions to the CIMA organization, and to the archival profession in general, in recent years. The award is given in appreciation for their service and leadership, by the peers and colleagues of the recipient, but to a recipient who may not yet qualify for the CIMA Life-Time Achievement Award. It is given one-time annually, during CIMA’s annual meeting.

After months and years of planning, the 2010 Western Round-up started today (Wednesday, April 28) with a roster of pre-conference workshops. The meeting is a super-regional joint meeting of CIMA, the Northwest Archivists, the Society of California Archivists, and the Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists gathering at the Seattle Renaissance hotel in Seattle, Washington.

Today’s program included When Disaster Strikes: Emergency Preparedness and Response, Grant Writing, and Implementing More Product, Less Process.

Oregon State University Libraries invites applications for the position of Oregon Multicultural Librarian, a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, tenure track faculty position within the University Archives at the Assistant Professor level.

Responsibilities include:

1. Coordination of the Oregon Multicultural Archives (OMA), including collection development, outreach, processing, and digitization
2. Liaison to the Ethnic Studies Department and the university’s cultural centers
3. Reference and information literacy
4. Supervision of students, volunteers, and interns
5. Committee service in the library, university, and archives associations
