SRMA Board Minutes of Meetings

May 30, 2003 Board Meeting

The SRMA Board met informally over breakfast on 30 May 2003 in the Blue and Gold Room inside the Student Union at Fort Lewis College, Durango at 0730.

Members present: Kevin Anderson, Bridget Burke, Steve Fisher, Nancy Freeman, Leah Davis Witherow, Ginny Kilander, and Brent Wagner. Todd Ellison, Local Program Chair, also joined the Board.

2003 Autumn Meeting: The precise date remains an uncertainty but the location will be Fort Morgan. Topics will include a how-to-deal-with-mold-and-bugs session, in addition to mechanisms for coping with hazardous materials. A recognized expert in the latter field lives in Casper. Kevin will attempt to procure his services for the conference. Plans entail the inclusion of more updates on niche collections.

Potential merger I: Pursuit of linking formally with CPA remains a possibility, but the issued was tabled until the next Board meeting.

Potential merger II: The Board cited vast geographic distances as the main concern for a merger with CIMA. The merger might affect adversely small one-person shops with little funding in Colorado and Wyoming. Rather than vote in a vacuum, the Board opted to conduct a straw poll of SRMA membership in attendance at Durango on the topic of merging with CIMA after John Newman presents his report to Durango conference attendees. (After said report, the SRMA membership spoke by voting against the merger proposal. The Yeas numbered 10; the Nays amounted to 16; and there were 4 abstentions. Therefore, the Board dropped the matter of outright unification with CIMA. The Board, however, will seek to conduct future joint meetings with several other regional archives associations that include, but are not limited to, CIMA.)

Election Results and Board shuffling: Steve reported that Bridget Burke prevailed as the Vice President/President-elect; Donna McCrea won the Treasurer slot; and Holly Giest emerged as the Member-at-Large.

Steve Fisher concludes his position as Past President. Leah Davis Witherow steps aside as President and assumes the Past President role; Kevin Anderson becomes the new President.

Karen Zoltenko resigned as Membership Chair. At the recommendation of Karen, the Board will invite Jay Trask from the Colorado State Archives to fulfill the duties associated with membership activities. Kevin will facilitate contact with Jay.

SRMA Scholarship: Kelly Murphy (Pikes Peak) won the travel award for the spring 2003 Durango conference.

SAA Grant: SAA contacted Kevin about getting involved in an overarching project that will gauge what educational qualifications archives managers desire out of applicants. The Board voted unanimously in favor of participating on this project.

Next Board meeting will occur in two months on one of following dates:

11 July
18 July

Brent will host it at the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library in Denver.

Meeting adjourned at 0845.
