meeting was held on June 4, 2004 in the Wyoming Stock Growers Association Room
at the American Heritage Center in Laramie, Wyoming.
Bridget Burke, SRMA President, called the meeting to order at 9:05.
Meeting minutes: The 2003 spring meeting minutes from Durango were approved as written.
Treasurer’s Report: As of 01 June 2004, the SRMA account balance stands at $6,230.96
Janet Waters will fulfill the remaining one-year left on Donna McCrea’s term as SRMA Treasurer. Due to a Montana relocation, Donna resigned as SRMA Treasurer.
Membership Report: Jay Trask reported succinctly that SRMA currently has over 190 members.
Newsletter Report: Thia Rand indicated that 15 June 2004 is the deadline for the next newsletter and encouraged submissions.
Upcoming Conferences: Holly Geist stated the 2004 SRMA autumn meeting will take place in Golden at the American Alpine Club on 01 October. The theme, “Interpreting History at the Archives,” will govern all proceedings.
2005 Joint CIMA/NWA/SCA/SRMA Meeting: Mark Shelstad reported that from 14 April to 16 April, at the Alexis Park Hotel, Las Vegas, a deliberately non-themed gathering will occur for Western archivists. SAA will conduct three workshops. The goal is for 300 people to attend. SRMA members are highly encouraged to participate in the conference and to present papers. Proposals for papers must be submitted by 15 September 2004. Local contacts for this meeting are Holly Geist and Kim Winters.
Archives Week: Jody Georgeson reported that October marks Archives Month for Colorado and Wyoming. Institutions with archival repositories are encouraged to create posters, give tours, conduct exhibits, and get-the-word-out about the archival profession. A committee of six people will assist Jody with this endeavor.
A-Census: Bridget Burke encouraged everyone to complete the Utah-based A-Census that will shed nation-wide baseline data on the profession. Preliminary results will be announced in Boston at the August SAA meeting. The survey takes about 45 minutes to complete.
EAD Regional Cooperative Project: Mark Shelstad relayed information on the progress of the collaborative effort of 22 archival institutions in New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Thanks to an NEH grant, work on the 19,000 coded pages will begin on 01 July 2004.
Election Results: Bridget Burke reported the election results as follows:
Nancy Freeman Vice President/President-elect
Brent Wagner Secretary
Monte Kniffen Member-at-Large (Program Chair)
Leah Davis Witherow concludes her position as Past President.
Voting: The SRMA membership voted unanimously to increase dues
and adopt a January—December membership period. Dues will run $10 for
students, $15 for individuals, $30 for institutions, and $30 for the sustaining
level. Changes will take effect on 01 January 2005.
Listening mostly to testimony offered by Rebecca Lintz (a board member of both organizations), the SRMA membership voted unanimously to merge with the Colorado Preservation Alliance. Bridget Burke will communicate with Jeanne Abrams, CPA President, about the decision. Assuming CPA responds favorably, the group no longer will exist on its own. Instead, under the auspices of SRMA, a Preservation Chair will join the SRMA Board.
Member Announcements: Johanna Harden reported that the Local History Archives for Douglas County relocated to the former Safeway building at 100 South Wilcox.
Steve Fisher reported that DU will find out about its accreditation at the ALA conference in late-June.
The entire SRMA membership acknowledged Kevin Anderson’s service during his stint as President and wished him well during this difficult, uncertain period.
Meeting adjourned at 9:55.
Respectfully submitted,
- Brent Wagner
SRMA Secretary
